The Storgruvan hoist, designed by Gustav af Uhr in 1824, was exceptional in its construction within the country and was based on an English model.
The Rope:
The rope was a three-strand band rope, with three chains side by side, connected with wooden blocks between them. The rope proved to be very durable; when the hoist was decommissioned in the early 1850s, the rope showed only minimal wear.
The hoist wheel marked with the letter B on the map is believed to be the hoist designed by Gustav af Uhr.
Protection Against Weather:
On the map, it appears that a roof was built from the hoist to the shaft. Since the band rope partly consisted of wood, it needed to be protected from rain and snow. The hoist’s construction and the type of rope made it particularly sensitive to snow and ice.
