The Myrkull Mine
Description:
The mine is a small mining passage, a so-called adit, extending approximately 8 meters into the rock.
Mining method:
At the far end of the passage, traces of fire-setting can be seen. This was an old mining method in which fires were lit against the rock to make it crack. Afterwards, bars and wedges were used to break pieces from the fractured rock. This was a time-consuming process and also contributed to a shortage of timber in the late 17th century. The mine probably originally dates from the 17th–18th century but may also have been worked later.
What was mined?
Iron ore was most likely mined in the Myrkull Mine. On the western side of Myrkullen, down toward the lake, traces of limestone quarrying can be seen.
Surroundings:
Down by the lake a blue coloration can be seen on the rock, which may be mineral deposits.
