At the pelletizing plant, iron ore concentrate was rolled into pellets in rotating drums. The concentrate was transported from the ore processing plant to the pelletizing plant via a narrow-gauge railway.
The formed pellets were then fired in furnaces, producing iron ore pellets.
Most of the pellets were transported to the sponge iron plant by means of dog railways, where they were further processed into sponge iron.
The sponge iron plant was built between 1951 and 1953 and remained in operation until 1973. The facility was demolished by blasting in 1975.
The pelletizing plant ceased operation in 1977, and the building was demolished in 2020.
A detailed description of sponge iron production and the pelletizing plant can be found in Jan Kruse’s book:
“Historien om gruvorna vid Persbergs Odalfält”, pages 64–71.
