The system was built by Jon Holmstedt and started operation in 1771. It was initially used at Nygruvan, but later also served the mines on Högberget, and between 1791–1793, Skogsbacksgruvan.
When a branch of the water channel was installed at Västra Mossgruvan in 1798, it was probably powered by the Nygruvan system. After the Persberg Canal was completed, the wheel was replaced by one located at Flintkärret, Braskefallet.
