Water Wheel at Jordåsen Mine

Construction and Function

The wheel was built in the 1820s and supplied the Jordåsen Mine with mechanical power.

Because the head of water was low, the wheel was probably unable to fully meet the mine’s power requirements.

Remains Today

West of road 63/26, remains of the dam can still be seen.

The wheel pit has most likely been destroyed by later road construction and other infrastructure works.

Reconstruction in the 1840s

During the 1840s, the original wheel was replaced with a new one.

The new wheel was positioned approximately 120 meters downstream from Gubbdammen.

Altered Watercourse

To supply water to the new wheel at Gubbdammen, the watercourse was modified:

• The water was redirected to join the Yngshytte River just upstream of Gubbdammen.

• The outlet into Lake Yngen was moved from Malmbergsviken to Yngshytteviken.

This resulted in a permanent alteration of the local water flow.
